About the Department

The Department of Physics of Estuary and Marine Waters was established in 1979. Its main focus is studying marine waters and river estuaries. Its secondary interest is studying freshwaters. The department includes specialists in the fields of marine physics, oceanography, water resources, marine forecasting, and coastal sciences. It is the only department which focuses on marine physics in Iraq. The department studies the hydrodynamics of the movement of water masses and the mixture of those masses and their physical properties regarding temperature and salinity. It also studies the speed and direction of marine currents and their effect on the water discharge readings, the distribution of sediment, and its means of transportation. It also observes the tide process and its effect in freshwater discharge on the estuaries and the exchange between the freshwater and saltwater masses on the environments of neighboring countries and the Arabian Gulf.

The department conducts research programs from the annual research plan of the MSC. It has staff in different specializations within marine physics. The department works performs surveys as well as hydrographic, bathymetric, and hydrological studies on the environment of the Arabian Gulf, neighboring waters, and domestic bodies of water. It is also interested in research with economic benefits for the best investment of water wealth and resources. The department includes several laboratories: a hydrographic survey laboratory, a physical properties laboratory, an information laboratory, and a marine radioactive pollution laboratory.

Department Mission

The Department of Physics aims to offer social services represented by achieving ISO standards in performing basic and relevant scientific research concerning the marine environment, marine waters, and river estuaries, and reinforcing and preserving their benefits. It is interested in scientific interaction with establishments and national, regional, and international institutions which are interested in marine research and studies, as well as providing programs for serving different groups within society by spreading marine knowledge and environmental awareness and the means of preservation for marine and freshwater wealth.

Department Vision

The department aims to develop and enhance the scientific and research capabilities of the scientists and specialists in marine physics. It also translates their work into application for the sake of sustaining their role as an effective tool for serving society in various scientific fields. It also provides a foundation for raising new researchers in this specialization to guarantee their best scientific role in the future. The department anticipates achieving its scientific tasks through achieving high certifications equivalent to the quality of countries with advanced technology and by procuring devices connected to satellites.

Department Goals

The concentrates on studying physical properties, hydrodynamics of the movement and mixture of water masses, tides, coastal processes and hydrographic studies of the northwest area of the Arabian Gulf, and the bodies of water related to it. It also studies weather changes and the interaction between weather factors and the sea surface, such as the formation of waves, etc. It also aims to establish modern laboratories, specialized with simulation processes. The department works on setting mathematical samples for simulating the reality of the above physical phenomena and other projects of the strategic plan of the department. It is also involved in holding symposia, international conferences, and offering scientific advice for interested parties.
