About the Department

In 1979 the Department of Marine Depths and Sedimentology was established,  and in 2010 its name was changed then the name of the dept was changed to Marine Geology. The department studies the sediment of the alluvial plain, including sedimentary and mineral properties, marine depths, physical and chemical components, environmental characteristics, and relation to marine and fresh waters. In addition, the department strategy has started a new trend of supporting research with economic benefits and for investing in water, mineral, and hydrocarbonic wealth as well as depth sedimentology.

Department Vision

  1. Making connections between the scientific departments of the MSC and civil society to give assistance and scientific solutions for problems that are faced by national establishments and directorates both locally and regionally.

  2. Enhancing knowledge and scientific qualifications by strengthening the connection between the scientific departments of the MSC with similar interests and building teamwork for the goal of perfecting scientific research.

  3. Making use of advanced means and technology for cooperating with the global scientific movement concerning field surveys and measurements and laboratory analysis according to ISO standards.

Department Goals

Conducting marine surveys and geological studies related to the environment of the Arabian Gulf, regional waters, and domestic bodies of water. The department is interested in studying the sediment of the alluvial plain, including sedimentary and mineral properties, marine depths, physical and chemical components, environmental characteristics, and relation to marine and fresh waters. The department supports research with economic benefits and for investing in water, mineral, and hydrocarbonic wealth, and depth sedimentology. It also encourages research that is interested in finding solutions for local and regional problems, such as the problem of water scarcity and low quality (including surface water and groundwater), deviation of the coastline, erosion, and sedimentary processes of the rivers and Iraqi marine coasts.
